Translational & Basic Science Research Center

The Translational & Basic Science Research Center conducts a wide range of clinical research projects aimed at identifying causes, perfecting treatments and finding cures for disorders affecting the ears, nose and throat.

In many areas, our research team is at the leading edge, driving the state of the art. For example, our team used the laboratory mouse to identify genes associated with hearing loss. This finding expedited the discovery of the gene responsible for Usher syndrome type 1F (USH1F), which causes deafness and blindness. Using the mouse model, researchers around the world can investigate specific tests and treatments for USH1F patients.

Groundbreaking work like the Usher gene identification and other discoveries related to age-related hearing loss, otitis media and biology of sensory hair cells has attracted more than $5 million in total funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

At our center, researchers explore a wide range of topics, including:

  • Tissue engineering for reconstructive surgery

The work is being conducted in collaboration with University Hospitals Case Medical Center,University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s HospitalUniversity Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, and the Biomedical Engineering Department at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
