Karen R. Horowitz, MD, FACP

Dr. Karen Horowitz, CWRU Professor of Medicine and immediate past President, Women Faculty of the School of Medicine, is a nationally recognized leader in academic general internal medicine whose research, curriculum development, and teaching activities focus on diabetes. In her role as Diabetes Program Chief at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VAMC, Dr.Horowitz led a multidisciplinary team of diabetes champions to develop educational programs and quality improvement initiatives that promote the care of veterans with diabetes. She has been a member of the CWRU Division of Clinical and Molecular Endocrinology and Principal Investigator in the ACCORD and ACCORD MIND NIH sponsored clinical research trials. As current Editor in Chief of SGIM Forum and member of the Society of General Internal Medicine National Council, her writings bring voice to the perspective of General Internal Medicine in the academic medical center. Karen is an advocate for women in academic medicine, and has developed programs for WFSOM that engage faculty in career development and promote the careers of women in academic medicine. She was a graduate of the FLEX Career Development program at CWRU School of Medicine and has contributed to programs at the Flora Stone Mather Center For Women at CWRU.

Dr. Horowitz is a graduate of the University at Buffalo School of Medicine (Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Science) and the University of Rochester Associated Hospitals Program in Internal Medicine. She is recipient of the Master Clinician Educator Award from the CWRU Department of Medicine, the Wings of Excellence Award from the Federal Executive Board of Cleveland and multiple Scholarship in Teaching Awards from the CWRU School of Medicine. Karen and her husband, Jeffrey Kahn, have two adult children. A cellist, she has been a member of the Suburban Symphony Orchestra, the World Doctors Orchestra and the World Civic Orchestra.
