Bienvenidos to the Applied Medical Spanish Program web site. This program is designed to strengthen our medical students' skills in medical Spanish and intercultural communication.

The Applied Medical Spanish Program was developed in August 2007 by a CWRU medical student, Jessica Galarraga, to increase the number of physicians graduating from the CWRU School of Medicine who are able to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking patients. The mission of the Applied Medical Spanish program is to reduce the health disparities faced by Hispanic-Americans by reducing one of its leading contributing factors: the English-Spanish language barrier. The program is designed to strengthen our medical students’ skills in medical Spanish and intercultural communication, and to provide a clinical Spanish-immersion experience that will prepare them to communicate competently with their Spanish-speaking patients.

HIGHLIGHTS

"It has long been a goal of mine to improve my Medical Spanish skills so that I can attend my Spanish-speaking patients with the equal quality of care as my English-speaking patients. It was truly inspiring to discover that so many of my colleagues shared the same aspiration. It is my hope that this program will help bridge the health disparities faced by the Latino community with one Spanish-speaking physician graduate at a time."
