Summary of 4-30-98 CME Minutes

1. Terms of service are ending for four CME faculty members. Please contact Dr. Joseph LaManna at if you are interested.

2. At a future meeting, the CME will be voting on a new policy to replace using the USMLE Step 1 as a gating mechanism to the third year. With the advent of the online USMLE Step 1 in 1999, the exam will be taken on demand. We will not have any control over when students take the USMLE Step 1. There exists uncertainty whether all students could even be accommodated in time for the onset of the July 1 clerkships. In addition, faculty have wanted to "divorce" the NBME exam from acting as the gating mechanism in the CWRU curriculum. We are faced with the deadline of formulating policy to be included in the Curriculum Handbook for the coming 1998-99 academic year. It has been suggested that a year two comprehensive exam be reinstated to serve as one element used by the Committee on Students to decide promotion to year three. The year two comprehensive would be a secure exam.
