Curriculum Revision Update - June 24, 1999

1. Dr. Marjorie Greenfield provided an update on the 12-month third year curriculum to begin in July 2000. She and Dr. Kristi Zakariasen have met with almost all the department chairs that have core clerkships at University Hospitals and MetroHealth Medical Center. They are currently meeting with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, clerkship directors, and the Primary Care Track leadership. The direction that the interview has been taking is to determine what we want to accomplish in the third year and to examine the curriculum of each clerkship. Focus groups will be conducted with current fourth year students and recent graduates. A retreat is scheduled for September 24 to clarify what we want to accomplish in the third year. The first retreat will be followed by 6 weeks of smaller working groups. A second retreat will follow. Dr. Greenfield is presently in the data-gathering mode. A questionnaire has been designed that is to be sent to the clerkship directors, requesting specific feedback on various strategies. Dr. Greenfield hopes that after the second retreat, if her group succeeds in coming up with a basic structure, she will be able to convey this to the CME. She plans to talk with the Dean to find out the parameters he wants, so that the final plan will be acceptable to all parties concerned. Dr. Greenfield views her approach to the third year curriculum as a strategic planning project with a beginning and an end. It would not be an ongoing project. Administrative leadership would remain with the clerkship directors and the coordinator of the Patient-Based Program.

2. Dr. Kristi Zakariasen provided a brief update on the first year curriculum. The exam schedule has been finalized. The start date is August 9 with four days of orientation. The Fundamentals of Medical Decision Making (FMDM) component of the Integrated Clinical Experience (ICE) begins on August 13. Discussants pointed out a need to tie up some loose ends with regard to communication concerning Year One. Specific leadership and lines of authority will not be known for a while.
