Curriculum Revision Update - April 29, 1999

1. In Dr. Katz’s absence, Dr. LaManna updated the CME on the progress of the curriculum for years one and two. A daily schedule has been developed. While there may have to be some re-shuffling, the topics have been defined. The Curriculum Leadership Council continues to meet. Council members are presently discussing the following issues:

    1. exams
    2. recognition for teaching
    3. a mechanism to handle the interface between the section leaders and subject committee chairs from year one that have comprised the Council thus far, and the section leaders and subject committee chairs from year two that will soon be convened to begin their work and become the new make-up of the Council
    4. integration of vertical themes and involvement of these particular faculty members for their input.

Dr. LaManna proposed that the CME’s next major action for the coming academic year might be weaving the vertical themes into the curriculum now that we have a foundation to anchor them.

2. Dr. Wish provided a year three curriculum update. He described the 1999-2000 year as a "done deal." The biggest problem was finding enough slots in the existing clerkship sites due to the loss of Mt. Sinai, the large class size, and the overlap with current third year students. Dr. Marjorie Greenfield will be chairing a committee to propose future revisions in the third year curriculum for the academic year 2000-2001. The Cleveland Clinic will be cooperating with the University Hospital and Metro sites in OB/GYN (obstetrics with UH, gynecology with Metro). A small number of CWRU students have done their Neurosciences clerkship at the Cleveland Clinic, and they will continue. The Cleveland Clinic will not be offering any clerkships of its own to CWRU students at this time. Compliments to Registrar Mr. Joe Corrao and his staff, Dr. Nosek’s Biomedical Technologies Information staff, and the clerkship directors, whose combined efforts contributed to having the scheduling mechanism in place and functioning to accommodate students in a timely fashion for their 1999 third year clerkship assignments.

3. Along with the intensive examination of the curriculum brought about by the revision undertaking, the Dean has convened a committee to examine the committee superstructure of the medical education effort. Examination of the leadership structure encompasses the functioning of the Committee on Medical Education. Dr. Martin Resnick, who has served two consecutive terms on the CME, is chairing the committee to examine the committee superstructure. Dr. LaManna has encouraged CME members to start thinking about what our role has been and what it might become.
