Welcome to the Student National Medical Association's Annual Region V Conference

This fall our Student National Medical Association (SNMA) chapter will once again host the Region 5 Conference in Cleveland, Ohio.  The SNMA is the nation's oldest and largest independent, student-run organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color.  Established in 1964 by medical students from Howard University School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College, the SNMA boasts over 40 years of service to underserved communities and medical students. Our membership includes more than 7,000 medical students, pre-medical students, residents and physicians.  Our region, Region V, represents Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana, which house twelve of the nation's most respected medical schools.  Region V has approximately 400 students, the majority of whom actively attend regional events.

In 2008 our chapter had the honor of hosting the Region 5 conference which was themed  “Building Bridges:  Forging New Relationships in Medicine.”  The conference provided a wonderful opportunity for high school students, pre-medical students and medical students to hear from various guest speakers, participate in interactive workshops and to network with various healthcare systems.  Workshop topics included career selection, cultural competency, research and translational medicine and medical school debt management.

The regional conference this year will be held October 5-6, 2012 at the Hilton Garden Inn and Conference Center in Cleveland, Ohio.  The theme of our conference this year is “Vital Signs: Awareness, Advocacy, and Access.”  Stimulating activities and discussions will incite new approaches for members of the healthcare profession to better serve our patients and communities.  This will also be an excellent opportunity for our chapter to showcase Cleveland’s innovative medical centers, cultural aspects, and local businesses.  During our 2008 regional conference, twenty-five organizations attended our recruitment fair including medical schools, residency programs, medical associations and US Armed forces.  We are hoping to have an even larger recruitment fair this year and would love to extend an invitation for you to attend.  The recruitment fair will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2012 from 10am- 3pm.  The cost of registration is $500 for vendors who would like to showcase their program to the enthusiastic students attending our conference.

For further information about our organization, our chapter, the conference, or to address any other questions you may have, please do not hesitate to contact me at shanteriad@gmail.com or by phone at (561) 876-9412.  Thank you for your consideration in attending our conference to showcase your organization.  We look forward to hosting a successful event and to forming a great relationship with your organization!
