Human Patient Simulators

Human Patient Simulators or High Fidelity Manikins are life-size adult and infant patient simulators that replicate elements of human physiology like respiration, heart beat and pulse. They are mechanical and computer controlled simulators that mimic human appearance and display symptoms and disease processes as they present in a real patient.

Human patient simulators can accurately respond to procedures like ventilation, CPR, intravenous medication and catherization. These sophisticated simulators can be programmed to simulate life-threatening emergencies and will automatically and realistically exhibit signs and symptoms that require intervention by the learner.

Benefits of Human Patient Simulators:

  • Learners are trained using reproducible standardized protocols
  • Core clinical competencies are practiced and refined in a safe, controlled environment
  • Critical scenarios are simulated to teach and assess clinical, communication and critical thinking skills
  • Learners can train and practice without risk, allowing errors to occur and reach their conclusion
  • Training and evaluation of inter-professional team dynamics is effective in reducing errors

Our center has three dedicated manikin rooms that can be arranged to simulate any patient care situation. Each room is equipped with large monitors to display physiological data generated by the manikins and ancillary medical equipment.

One-way viewing windows provide direct observation by faculty or preceptors. Audio/video recording is available with video-on-demand (VOD) access for student self-reflection and/or preceptor evaluation.
