Facility

The Mt. Sinai Skills and Simulation Center is a free standing facility of approximately 8,500 square feet. It is divided into three general areas: Standardized Patient Exam, Technical Simulation and Conference/Debriefing area.

The Standardized Patient Exam area consists of a large central core with eight adjoining patient exam rooms. Each exam room is equipped with two video cameras, a microphone and ancillary medical equipment. The central core and individual exam rooms have computer workstations where the learners log on to the video recording system and/or education management system to access their videos, pre and post encounter instructions and assessment checklists. Preceptors can observe and evaluate the learners directly from the observation corridor via one-way mirrors and audio headphones or remote via video streaming within the center.

The Technical Simulation area is comprised of three simulation rooms and the control room. The control room is a centralized area for video monitoring, recording and storage. It has a one-way observation mirror into each simulation room and serves as a remote control location for the high fidelity manikins. The largest simulation room has space and connections supporting the operation of three simultaneous manikins. It can also be used for a large classroom setting or serve as a multi-station technical training area. Usage of the technical simulation area is adaptable by changing environmental props and equipment to support the instructional design.

The center has two conference/debriefing rooms equipped with computers, projectors and large AV monitors. Video can be streamed real-time from any of the simulation areas for direct observation of the simulation activity in progress or for post-activity debriefing while simultaneously recording on going sessions.
