Research

My research interest is focused on analysis of structure and function of proteins using information derived from X-ray Crystallography. In particular, I am involved in structural characterization of HIV envelop glycoprotein to assist the design of HIV antigens that can elicit broadly neutralizing antibodies, with a long term goal of developing a protective vaccine against the virus. We also have collaborations on structure based drug design against the targets implicated in malarial infection and lung cancer.

We are actively involved in New York Structural Genomics Research Consortium, where a large number of structures are determined in an effort to obtain 3-D structure information for all proteins. We provide synchrotron beamline access for protein crystallographers around the world. We also developed a high-throughput technology, in association with structure genomics, to characterize metalloproteins using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The results are used to aid in structure determination and to create a database which will include characterization of at least one protein from each of the 5000 largest protein families and detailed structure models of metal binding sites for metalloproteins.
