Strategic Plan Town Hall Meetings
The Strategic Plan Working Groups will be hosting a series of Town Hall meetings to discuss the strategic planning process and solicit ideas from the faculty, staff, and students. The Working Groups are currently developing strategic priorities for the SOM and the chairs and members of each group will be in attendance to present their ideas to you. This is an opportunity for you to participate in the development of goals and objectives for the School of Medicine.
We hope you can attend.

Concurrently with the University's Strategic Planning process for 2013, we would like to update the SOM Strategic Plan to better reflect new goals and objectives for the next five years. To ensure we are representing the needs of the entire school, we want to keep you updated on the progress of the planning, and solicit your suggestions, ideas, and questions regarding the SOM Strategic Plan.
We have held a number of Town Hall meetings to discuss specific strategies for basic science research. We have met with the chairs and division chiefs in a series of "Dean's Rounds", and presented to the various School of Medicine committees and councils. The Dean is presenting the Strategic Planning process at the upcoming Town Hall meeting on March 6th.
Additionally, four Working Groups have been established to develop strategies in specific areas. The groups were developed by Faculty Council and the Dean's Office. Members were either elected by Faculty Council or designated by the Dean's Office. Chairs and Co-Chairs are in bold.

The overall focus of the School of Medicine in the next five years will be along the following themes:
- Innovative Medical and Graduate Education
- Enhanced Research Environment
- Community Health Engagement
- Enhanced Faculty Climate
Rather than focus on individual departments, we would like to look at major scientific disciplines to encourage collaboration, enable innovation, and enhance research in these areas:
- Genome Sciences
- Cancer Biology
- Cardio-Pulmonary
- Neurobiology
- Therapeutics/Structural Biology
- Metabolic Sciences
- Immunobiology/Infection
To be able to achieve research excellence in these areas, we will need to provide significant technological support to these disciplines. We have identified a number of key enabling technologies that are critical to our research success:
- Epidemiology/Biostatistics/Bioinformatics/Outcomes
- Stem Cells
- Imaging
