Overview of the National Cancer Institute Central IRB Initiative

The Central Institutional Review Board (CIRB) Initiative is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in consultation with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP). The CIRB provides an innovative approach to human subject protection through a "facilitated review" process that can streamline local IRB reviews of adult and pediatric national multi-center cancer treatment trials.

NCI C-IRB Website

The Case Cancer IRB is enrolled in and participates in this initiative. The Case Cancer IRB will perform a facilitated review of all NCI-sponsored Cooperative Group studies approved through the NCI CIRB, including the Pediatric NCI CIRB, in which Case and/or the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center wishes to participate. The Case Cancer IRB determines on an individual study basis whether to accept the NCI CIRB as IRB of record or to perform full IRB review of the study. The decision-making process for this determination is detailed in the Case Cancer IRB SOP for Utilizing the NCI CIRB [Version Dated 1 7 2010].

The Case Cancer IRB maintains and posts on a monthly basis a Memorandum, signed by the IRB Administrative Director, listing all of the reviews for which the Case Cancer IRB has accepted a facilitated review. This Memorandum can serve as signed documentation from the Case Cancer IRB acknowledging acceptance and continued acceptance of the facilitated review through the NCI CIRB.
