Required training for principal investigators before a protocol can be processed:

  • Occupational Health
  • Investigator Orientation
  • Good Laboratory Practices
  • Facility Specific Tour
  • Investigator Refresher Module

  • Investigator Refresher Module (for all research personnel)
  • Protocol- and Species-Specific Training

The IACUC provides training for research staff through a variety of on-line and hands-on training sessions conducted by the ARC. When personnel are added to an IACUC protocol, they are required to complete both on-line and hands-on training in facility orientation, occupational health and safety training as well protocol specific training according to their needs. Hands-on training involves scheduling one-on-one training sessions with ARC staff.

Protocol Specific Training

Working with Pathogens?
If you are working with class 2 infectious agents, you will need to complete the on-line Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) Training Module. When you have completed this on-line module, you will need to schedule a walk-through of the animal housing area with Jean Holbert (368-2507, jal27@case.edu, M,W,R). If you are working with class 3 infectious agents, you will need to contact Dr. Nannette Kleinman, nkh@case.edu  to schedule your orientation and training for working with ABSL3 agents at CASE.

Performing Rodent Surgery?
If you will be performing survival surgery on rodents, you will need to complete the on-line Rodent Survival Surgery Module. Also see the Rodent Surgery Guide.

Performing Non-Rodent Surgery?
If you will be performing survival surgery on NON-rodent species, you will need to complete the on-line Survival Surgery Training Module and the Non-rodent Medical Records Training Module. When you have completed these modules, you will need to schedule a follow up meeting with Jean Holbert, jal27@case.edu or the Research Services Veterinary Technician (368-2507).

Will you be ordering Controlled Drugs?
If you plan on purchasing controlled drugs through the Animal Resource Center, you will need to complete the Controlled Drug Ordering Training Module .

Hands-on Training
Hands-on training is facility specific (link to Facility Access) and protocol specific.  Contact Tami McCourt for your protocol specific training requirements.  Contact the ARC veterinarians or veterinary technicians with any questions you may have about how to perform procedures involving animals (368-3490). The Animal Resource Center also coordinates an AALAS based training course, which is offered bi-annually and is open to all Animal Resource Center personnel, research staff, and research personnel from local institutions.  The next course will be offered in early 2006.  Contact Jean Holbert, jal27@case.edu for more information.

Online Training Resources Hosted Elsewhere:

  • The Intramural NIH Training Program in Animal Use. This online training program provides useful information about animal use regulations, as well as about the care and handling of lab animals. High production values and lots of useful information.

NIH training videos for working with dogs and nonhuman primates. These videos provide useful information about worker safety, and proper handling procedures.
