CASE IACUC POLICIES

Policy on Investigator-assigned space in the ARC.

Current practices regarding investigator-assigned areas within the ARC will change effective with the ongoing renovation of ARC facilities.  These changes are necessary to ensure all activities in the ARC are under an approved animal protocol, and that the responsibility of activities ongoing in the space is clearly assigned to individual investigators.  In addition, it clarifies the role of the ARC director in regulating activities within investigator-assigned areas, since this space is subject to inspection and compliance standards set by regulatory/credentialing agencies.

POLICY STATEMENT

The past practice of “department-assigned” space within the ARC will be discontinued.

The practice of “investigator-assigned” space within the ARC will continue with the following provisions:

1.   All space assignments will be made by the ARC director 368-3490.Space assignments will be made to individual investigators only, with the exception of institution-wide core facilities.

2.   Assignment of space will be made only when a well-defined need is presented and which is feasible given the current available space. An approved IACUC protocol for the research is needed.  All users of the space must be listed on the protocol and meet all training requirements.

3.   Assigned space in the ARC will be used for animal work only; no other research or non-research uses are permitted.

4.   Space assignments will be reviewed annually at the time of the IACUC protocol renewal.  Use and/or location of assigned space may change at these review periods.  New space assignment requests will be considered only after obtaining IACUC approval for the study.

5.   The ARC director has ultimate control over the space.  Any activities or equipment that does not meet regulatory agency standards will cease and/or be removed.  Failure to rectify identified problems within a reasonable timeframe will result in the submission of a non-compliance complaint to the IACUC.

6.  Existing facility fee structure will not change.
