Policy for the use of the Animal Imaging Facility.
All in vivo animal imaging or procedures performed
in the patient care areas of the Department of Radiology,
including the nuclear medicine rooms, radiographic
suites, computed tomography scanners, ultrasound rooms,
and magnetic resonance imaging facility must adhere
to the following guidelines:
- The patient table/magnet/scanner must be draped
with impervious drapes during the entire animal procedure,
including all in-room preparation and imaging. Any
surface that may potentially be contaminated with
blood/urine/feces during the procedure must be covered
by the impervious drapes.
- All contaminated drapes, towels; gloves used in
the procedure must be gathered and disposed of in
the animal resource center or in a labeled "infectious
materials" container in the department.
- All surfaces in contact with the animal, or potentially
contaminated, must be thoroughly disinfected with
a Clorox-based agent after the animal procedure and
before the imaging area is used for any patient procedures.
- All non-imaging portions of the experiment, including
open surgery, euthanasia, and specimen extraction,
should be performed in the animal resource center
facilities rather than in the patient care areas
of the department insofar as possible.
- All animals transported through patient care areas
must be covered at all times to prevent transmission
of external parasites.
- Random source dogs must have undergone a recent
flea dip prior to transport into the department.
Compliance with these policies is mandatory for use
of the imaging facilities of the Department of Radiology.
If any questions arise concerning specific animal procedures
or protocols, please contact Dr. Flask prior to the
experiment to ensure the safety of our patient population.
