CASE IACUC POLICIES

Policy on Elective Surgical Repairs.

This policy covers requests to perform an elective subsequent surgery for surgical repair/revision of surgical experimental models.  Please note that medically necessary surgeries to correct emergency and/or life-threatening problems do not fall into this category, however, the ARC Veterinary Staff must be notified in advance of ALL surgical procedures including emergency repairs via the submission of a Procedure Data Sheet.

Investigators requesting permission to perform an elective surgical repair must complete a Elective Second Surgery Form.  Prior to the elective surgical repair, the animal must be examined and released for surgery by an ARC veterinarian.  Animals with incomplete recovery from the initial surgery or with active infections of the previous surgical site may not be released.  Reparative procedures expected to result in extreme levels of post operative pain and/or distress may be denied.

Requests for elective surgical repairs are approved via expedited review conferred by the signature of an ARC veterinarian.

Submit the completed form to the Animal Resource Center Office, Room TB03A, School of Medicine, Telephone (216) 368-3490, Fax (216) 368-4763.
