For six weeks, students are kept busy with
classes, home work and social activities. Check out the schedule to the right.
Curriculum
All students will take daily classes in physics, biology and chemistry. Students attend and participate in biomedical research lectures taught by our medical school faculty. We have developed exciting case studies that will give students an opportunity to apply the basic science they learn in class to real-life medical problems. Students can also sign up for workshops to improve their interviewing, writing, and study skills. While SMDEP is not designed to prepare students for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), students will take three full-length practice MCAT examinations while they are here. Some of our medical and graduate students will also work to assist students in tackling MCAT problems. Students who wish to focus only on MCAT preparation should consider another program.
All students will have at least two opportunities to participate in the Medical Apprentice Program (MAP). Through the MAPS, students spend part of a day with a physician in a health-care setting. We also sponsor a Medical School Fair, where approximately 20 medical school representatives from across the country talk with students about their institutions. Another notable aspect of SMDEP is students' daily interaction with many minority medical students and residents. Every participant will have an opportunity for a one-on-one meeting with a member of our Admissions Committee.
