Meeting Chair: Robert P. Friedland, MD

OBJECTIVES

The main scope of this meeting is to provide objective scientific and educational information to community members, patients, families, and medical professionals about aging, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.  Education will focus on:

1.   Identification of risk factors and their control (how lifestyle can be modified to lower risk)

2.   Importance of recognition of signs of dementia and how to access care

3.   Importance of early and proper treatment of AD and vascular dementia

4.   How caregivers can cope with dementia patients.

We have already developed a comprehensive program of community education to alert the public in the Greater Cleveland's African American communities to the importance of these risk factors for disease, and how individual lifestyle can be altered to lower disease risk. Efforts are focused on the four most modifiable risk factors for stroke and Alzheimer’s disease - diet, hypertension, smoking and physical inactivity.  We work to enhance compliance with hypertension medications, and increase awareness of the dangers of smoking, hypertension, high fat diet, high salt intake, and physical and mental inactivity.
