PROGRAMS

Types of programs

Several types of simulation training programs are possible at MSSSC. Some groups select a single modality focused training while others prefer a multiple station multiple modality program. Technical training programs utilize manikins and/or task trainers (ie partial manikins). Standardized patient interviews provide for education and evaluation of non-technical skills like communication and professionalism. Hybrid programs utilize both technical and non-technical simulation. A popular concept incorporates a manikin resuscitation exercise with disclosure of either patient death or medical error to the family.

Students from many different schools have benefited from simulation training at MSSSC. The students vary in experience and include community first responders, undergraduates, graduates, and practitioners. Undergraduate students in dentistry, medicine, nursing, and respiratory therapy have practiced here. Regional and national continuing education programs for advanced practice nurses and physicians have been held here. MSSSC works in partnership with these groups to develop simulation education modules to complement their curriculum and learning objectives rather than offer a fixed list of possible programs.

Available Simulation equipment

Manikins: MSSSC currently has three full scale human patient manikins. The Emergency Care Simulator (ECS ®) and BabySim ® by METI. Noelle ® by Gaumard has arrived but she will not be ready to giving birth until our in-service training is completed in August 2007. To view an example of a manikin team training video check out the website of our MetroHealth Anesthesiology colleagues.

We have a large selection of task trainers/partial manikins. There are two basic types of equipment: trainers for physical examination and trainers for procedural skills. Many of the physical exam components demonstrate both normal and abnormal findings. We strive for diversity in our trainers. We have both adult and pediatric models. In addition, we have ordered a variety of skin tones and geriatric models if they are available. We have multiple units (2-4) of most trainers.
