MT. SINAI SKILLS AND SIMULATION CENTER

THE FACILITY

General Description

The MSSSC can be divided into three zones: standardized patient examination, technical simulation, and education support. The center spans approximately 8500 sq ft. A state of the art audio-video system allows recording of all center instructional and evaluative experiences.

See architectural floorplan.

Support Areas

The support areas form an ā€œLā€ at the entrance to the MSSSC. Standardized patients enter the center through a separate door from the lobby. Their facilities include a lounge with kitchenette and restrooms. The restroom area also incorporates a locker room and changing area. The standardized patients will enter the examination room portion of the MSSSC through a back door. The tall arm of the L is accessed through the MSSSC main entrance. It extends the entire length of the building on the west side. It houses offices for the MSSSC Director, three conference rooms, a student lounge, and restrooms. The conferences rooms are varied in size. From smallest to largest, they will accommodate 8, 15 and 30 participants. Each conference room, the student lounge, and the Director's office are equipped for video monitoring and debriefing.

See conference room and projection system.

Standardized Patient Examination Area

This region is closer to the entryway than the technical area. There are eight mirror image examination rooms, arranged in two groups of four, surrounding a student/participant core. The standardized patients will enter the examination room from the exterior hallway. Each room is equipped with 2 video cameras, a microphone and a one way mirror. Students will be able to access point of care information inside the room. Plans are in progress to emulate the health information management systems purchased by the local hospital systems. Observation and evaluation of the student interaction can be done directly from the hallway or remotely via video. Each room has a monitoring station with audio headphone jack and computer support workstation. The central core area contains eight student workstations. Here the students will log into each room and receive instructions. Monitoring of this area is possible through video camera and intercom.

Technical Simulation Area

The technical area occupies the northeast corner of the building. It contains three simulation rooms, an office and the control room. The control room is the central core for video monitoring, recording, and storage. It has one way observation mirrors into each simulation room and can also serve as a remote control location for manikins in these rooms. The two smaller rooms, approximately 400 sq ft each, share a common hallway with the standardized patient observation area. Each of these rooms has a one way mirror facing the hallway and an external monitoring station similar to the patient exam rooms. The larger room has space and connections for three simultaneous manikins. It may also serve as a classroom for forty or a multi-station technical training experience. Although these three technical rooms received functional designations on the architectural plans, usage will be fluid with changing environmental props and equipment to support the instructional design.
