MEDICAL STUDENT RESEARCH

Office of Medical Student Research

Mission

The University Program at Case Medical School is an innovative four-year curriculum that includes a focus on both medicine and health by providing a strong foundation in basic, clinical and population sciences. The School seeks to emphasize the biology of disease and the social and behavior determinants of illness of the individual patient and the health of the public, as described in Dean Ralph I. Horwitz's white paper entitled "A Proposal for Radical Reform of Medical Education". The four cornerstones of the curriculum are research and scholarship, mastery of clinical skills, leadership, and civic professionalism. The core academic program in years 1-2 incorporates lecture-based approaches, case-oriented problem solving, and laboratories to provide an optimal learning experience and is supported by an extensive electronic curriculum. Clinical training also begins in the first year and continues throughout the four years. The curriculum contains many opportunities for students to individualize their education and obtain greater depth in self-selected areas.

The mission of the Office of Medical Student Research is to facilitate opportunities for University medical students to develop their interests in research and scholarship. Our objectives are:
  • to enhance opportunities for medical students to develop their interests in basic, translational, clinical, and population-based research and in scholarship within the four-year program
  • to provide the infrastructure for the M.D. degree requirement of research and scholarship
  • to provide opportunities for those interested in pursuing a fifth year fellowship in research
  • to facilitate joint MD/MS, MD/MA, MD/MPH or other dual degree programs and other research opportunities that interface with the graduate programs in the School of Medicine and Health and other CWRU schools or faculties
