Dear Senior Medical Student,

MetroHealth Medical Center is an academic medical center with a century-long affiliation with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. We are a large tertiary referral center with a diverse patient population and an inspiring mission to provideexcellent care to all regardless of their ability to pay.
In 2005, we were designated a Solucient Top 100 Hospitals Performance Improvement Leader by ranking in the top 15 of the nation’s 132 major teaching hospitals for extraordinary performance in improving patient safety and outcomes.
Metro is an absolutely terrific place to train in Internal Medicine.
The Internal Medicine Residency Program prepares our residents for fulfilling careers as leaders in academic and clinical medicine. We pride ourselves in the autonomy of our housestaff, the flexibility of our diverse programs, the quality and dedication of our faculty, and our collegial, supportive approach to housestaff training.
The Case Department of Medicine at MetroHealth includes over 120 Case School of Medicine faculty members. Eleven divisions provide training in Cardiology, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Hospital Medicine, Geriatrics/Palliative Care and General Internal Medicine. Thirty-six faculty members in the Department of Medicine spend a substantial portion of their time directing and participating in externally funded research. Currently, Department of Medicine faculty are the principal investigators of over 40 million dollars of active research grants and contracts, mostly from the National Institutes of Health, and over 5 million dollars in active clinical trials. The majority of residents participate in clinical and basic research with mentors on the Metro campus and throughout the CWRU community.
We had excellent matches in 2005 and 2006. Our interns and residents are very strong academically. This year, our graduates enjoyed a 100% pass rate on the American Board of Internal Medicine Certifying Exam. Since 2004, 96% have passed the boards on their first try.
In the last two years 65% of graduates have gone on to fellowship training either in our own excellent programs or to other very competitive programs across the nation. Recently, our residents have secured fellowships at Harvard/Massachusetts General, Harvard/Beth Israel Deaconess, National Cancer Institute, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Dartmouth, Vanderbilt, Brown, Mayo Clinic, University of North Carolina, University of Michigan, Ohio State University, University of Pittsburgh, SUNY Buffalo, University of Iowa, Indiana University, Louisiana State University, and Emory University (See Fellowship Information).
I started my tenure as the Chairperson of the Case Department of Medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center in June 2002. Since then we have committed substantial resources to building the excellence of our residency training program, to growing our exceptionally high quality clinical programs, and to expanding our nationally competitive research programs. We are committed to continued investment over the next five years.
Case/MetroHealth is a very exciting place to be right now!
