HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY

Hematology and Oncology Clinical Programs/Service

The Hematology and Oncology Division of the Department of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Case Medical Center is the core treatment and evaluation service of the Ireland Cancer Center (ICC) of University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC) of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center.  It has many ongoing clinical oncologic and hematologic programs.

Out-Patient Programs

Malignant Hematology

Dr. Hillard Lazarus directs the hematologic malignancy program and is the Clinical Director of the hematopoetic stem cell program.  Dr. Stanton Gerson, ICC and Case Comprehensive Cancer Center Director, participates in the care of patients with hematologic malignancies.  Dr. Brenda Copper has a major interest in acute leukemia.  Dr. Mary Laughlin is recognized for her research in umbilical cord blood transplantation.  Dr. Tamilia Kindwall-Keller has a focus on myelodysplastic syndromes, multiple myeloma, and chronic leukemias.  Dr. Paul Barr is focused on lymphoma.  Last year, the stem cell program performed 65 transplants. 

Medical Oncology:

Dr. Paula Silverman, Associate Chief of Hematology and Oncology for Clinical Programs, directs the breast team along with Drs. Joseph Baar, Hanspreet Kaur, Cynthia Owusu and Lois Teston.  Laura Moore, NP leads the breast cancer survivorship program and clinic.  Dr. Henry Koon heads the medical oncology Cutaneous Malignancy program; Dr. Smitha Krishnamurthi directs the Colon-Rectal GI Group and Dr. Joanna Brell, Pancreatic Oncology; Dr. Deepjot Singh also participates in GI Oncology; Dr. Matthew Cooney leads GU Oncology, Dr. Joseph Gibbons manages the sarcomas; Dr. Panos Savvides, Head & Neck Oncology; Dr. Afshin Dowlati, Thoracic Oncology along with Drs. Patrick Ma, Balazs Halmos, and Tanyanika PhillipsDr. Charles J Nock, collaborates with members of the Neurologic Institute to treat patients with nervous system malignancies.  Each of these disease-oriented groups has a multidisciplinary conference for patient presentation and development of management plans.  In addition to these programs, Dr. Cynthia Owusu is developing the Geriatric Oncology Program and Dr. Tanyanika Philips, a Health Equity program for oncologic patients.   

Non-Malignant Hematology:

Drs. Alvin Schmaier and Keith McCrae have a vascular medicine consultative clinic that meets weekly.  Dr. McCrae focuses on patients with hemophilia and thrombocytopenia; Dr. Schmaier attends to thrombosis and anticoagulation problems.  Drs. Clark Distelhorst and Willem Van Heeckeren see patients with anemia and lymphoma.  In addition, Drs. Joseph Bokar and Joseph Gibbons have an outpatient clinic for patients with sickle cell anemia.  The hematology and oncology division has created a day outpatient treatment unit for sickle cell anemia patients in the Ireland Cancer Center.  A geriatric anemia clinic also will be developed in the outpatient area.

In-Patient Programs

The Hematology/Oncology service has an in-patient hematologic and stem cell transplantation service, two in-patient medical oncology services (Ratnoff and Weisman services), and an in-patient hematology and oncology consultative service.  Each of the services is staffed continuously by an attending hematologist/oncologist and a hematology/oncology fellow. 

Veterans Administration Hospital: The Division provides hematology/oncology physicians for the Veterans Administration hospital.  Dr. Joseph Bokar is the Chief of Hematology and Oncology at the VA hospital.  Drs. Tania Cortez (100%), Hanspreet Kaur (50%), and Deepjot Singh (50%) provide coverage at that facility. 

Community Sites of the Hematology and Oncology Division

The Division has made a great effort to re-organize the design and management of the ICC network as it pertains to the delivery of community medical oncology.  Dr. Matthew Cooney has been named Associate Director of the Ireland Cancer Center Community Sites to manage physicians and quality of medical oncology care of the ICC at the community sites.  The division has two kinds of overlapping community facilities: one where community-based oncologists are present full-time; a second where University Hospital Case Medical Center physicians have specialty clinics or a multidisciplinary clinic at a community site. 

University Hospitals Chagrin Highlands Health Center: Dr. Lois Teston is the Medical Director of the Chagrin Highlands site of the ICC in Orange Village, OH.  In addition to Dr. Teston, Drs. Stanton Gerson, Brenda Cooper, Smitha Krishnamurthi, Matthew Cooney, and Henry Koon have specialty clinics at that location. 

University Hospitals Westlake Health Center: Drs. Paula Silverman and Joseph Baar care for breast cancer patients and and Dr. Joanna Brell for patients with GI malignancies at Westlake.  Dr. Tamila Kindwall-Keller has a practice in hematologic disorders at Westlake.  Dr. Charles J Nock sees primarily urologic oncology and CNS tumors at this location.

University Suburban Health Center: Drs. Matthew Cooney, Joseph Gibbons, and Paula Silverman have practices in this location. 

Lake/University Ireland Cancer Center(L/UICC): Dr. Joel Saltzman is the Medical Director at the Lake/University Ireland Cancer Center.  Drs. Willem Van Heeckeren, Maria Espinosa, and Mark Bergman have community-based oncology practices there. 

Ireland CancerCenter at Landerbrook: Dr. Eliot Dickman is the Medical Director of the Landerbrook site.  Drs. Judah Friedman and Jason Stern also practice at this location.  These physicians provide inpatient consultative coverage at Hillcrest, Geagua, and Richmond Hospitals.

Ireland Cancer Center at Southwest General Hospital: Dr. Greg Warren is the Medical Director.  Drs. Gil Peleg and Jennifer Vollweiller practice at this location.

Ireland Cancer Centers at Trumball Memorial Hospital in Warren, Ohio and Firelands Hospital in Sandusky Ohio are programs currently under development.
