Welcome to the Department of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and our two teaching hospitals, University Hospitals Case Medical Center and the Wade Park Veterans Administration. This past academic year has been characterized by continued growth and enhanced excellence in our tripartite mission of patient care, research and teaching.
Patient Care
Full time faculty in the Department of Medicine are directly responsible for over 16,000 annual admissions and approximately 100,000 ambulatory visits to UH Case Medical Center, UH community hospitals and UH practice sites. There is an average daily census of 250 patients at our flagship hospital distributed among 9 teaching and 4 uncovered services. A major achievement was the migration of all 21 clinical departments into our newly formed integrated faculty practice plan. Despite many challenges, performance has exceeded expectations.
Research
The Department is proud of our longstanding rank within Departments of Internal Medicine in the top 10% for National Institutes of Health extramural funding. Major recent achievements include the successful recompetition of the AIDS Clinical Trails Unit, the Tuberculosis Research Unit and the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. Two new Program Project Grants and a new NIH MERIT Award completed a strong year across the continuum of basic, translational and clinical research education.
Education
The Department has a strong and enduring commitment to medical student, housestaff, fellowship and continuing medical education. Departmental leadership at multiple levels was critically involved in the design implementation and continuous improvement of the new WR2 Medical School Curriculum. We are proud to welcome an outstanding new internship class (the best match in 20 years!). We graduated thirty Internal Medicine residents this year. Ninety five percent of our graduating residents entered subspecialty training, with the majority of the residents matching at their top fellowship choice. Notably 75% of our Chief Residents have chosen careers in academic medicine over the past 10 years. Last year the Department of Medicine trained fifty-six fellows in nine specialties. The combination of an outstanding faculty, substantial volume and diversity of research and patients provides an outstanding educational experience at all levels.
Over the past year we have added 21 new full time faculty across all Divisions. Outstanding new divisional leadership was appointed in Internal Medicine/Geriatrics and Digestive Diseases. We have enjoyed continued growth of physician scientist and clinician educator faculty in all disciplines and we look forward to another stimulating and challenging year.
