Minority Supplement to NIH
Research Grants
As part of an NIH-wide
program, principal investigators holding NIH research grants may request
supplemental funds to improve diversity of the research workforce. These monies
can support your minority summer research student, among others. In general,
the parent grant usually has 2 years or more remaining at the time of the
supplemental award.

The necessary
information to complete the supplementary proposal is included on the summer
student application and your NIH grant. Please submit the proposal to the NIH
6-8 weeks before the student is expected to arrive.

Program Announcement for complete information, and note a couple to key points:
The PROPOSAL includes
A
three to four page description, prepared by the Principal Investigator that
includes:
-A summary or abstract of
the funded grant or project.
-A plan for the research and
career development experiences proposed for the candidate.
-A description of how the
research and career development experiences will expand and foster the research
capabilities of the candidate; how the proposed experiences relates to the
specific research goals and objectives of the parent grant; and a description
of the mentorship that will be provided.
The proposed BUDGET is
limited to $5000 total for the summer, including stipend, travel and supplies
A copy of the most recent
official TRANSCRIPT if the candidate is needed (it is in the summer student
application).
The proposal should be sent
to the awarding component program officer NOT to CSR.
