INSTITUTIONAL ENVIRONMENT AND RESOURCES |
Case School of Medicine strongly supports faculty and students engaged in research. By contributing
resources and space for faculty, as well as educational stipends for students, the SOM is intimately
committed to research training. The Case SOM is the largest biomedical research institution in Ohio, as
measured by National Institutes of Health research grant funds (the SOM ranked 18 in the nation in NIH funding
in 2003) and many departments continue to be in the top ten for NIH funding nationwide. Over 300
biomedical PhD students are currently earning their degrees in our 15 PhD training programs.
The School of Medicine has numerous facilties that enhance the training environment. A state of the art
transgenic mouse facility is run by the Genetics Department and is used by many investigators to create
transgenic mice or knockouts. The SOM has recently created a Center for Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics
that will be run by Dr. Nadeau. Imaging Facilities for Confocal,
two photon, electron microscopic analyses are available in the Neurosciences and Pathology Departments, as well as the Cancer Center, on a fee-for service
basis. The Cleveland Center for Structural Biology represents an inter-institutional collaboration with shared
faculty and instrumentation with outstanding x-ray crystallographic and NMR instrumentation. The Health Sciences Animal Core Services have recently enjoyed significant
re-investiment, with updating. New facilities for animal behavior are under development.

The new Wolstein biomedical research facility significantly increases research laboratories at
Case, with 320,000 square feet distributed over 8 floors. Two floors are below grade and are dedicated to
laboratory support and building support functions, including an animal resource facility. In summary, Case SOM
is an outstanding research-intensive medical school that is strongly committed to graduate education and research.
