University Hospitals Case Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program
Welcome
It is my pleasure to introduce you to the University Hospitals Case Medical Center Family Medicine Residency program. Our residency is the primary affiliate of Case Western Reserve University Department of Family Medicine and is located adjacent to the CWRU campus in the vibrant University Circle area, a verdant urban oasis which also houses Cleveland’s major cultural institutions. Our residents learn from some of the foremost clinical and academic leaders in the country at tertiary hospitals with national reputations such as Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. Our residents also experience core curricular rotations in community settings affiliated with the University Hospitals Health System.
The curriculum features a traditional block format with longitudinal experiences. Each class comes together for four blocks of in-depth Family Medicine training over the course of the residency. Didactics, workshops and group projects teach clinical and procedural skills, Behavioral and Community Medicine, Practice Management, Advanced Life Support courses, and much more. Training in Osteopathic Manipulation is given to all residents and we have successfully supported our osteopathic interns through the AOA process for internship accreditation. Residents see their continuity patients in our Family Medicine Center and affiliated nursing homes. Our residents also work at the Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland and Care Alliance Health Center with the underserved medical consumer. Our patient population is socioeconomically and ethnically diverse and we are designated as both a HRSA Health Provider Shortage Area and NHSC Loan Repayment Site.
Various training tracks are available, including Global Health and Care of Medically Vulnerable Populations. Our residents can elect a four-year integrated program leading to an MPH and/or Preventive Medicine board eligibility. Available fellowship opportunities include our own Surgical OB, Procedural Women's Health, and Academic Fellowships, or other local fellowships such as Urgent Care, Geriatrics, or Sports Medicine.
Our department also boasts one of the most productive and varied Family Medicine research divisions nationally. We serve as the editorial home of the country’s premier academic Family Medicine journal, the Annals of Family Medicine. A vibrant research infrastructure has helped interested residents develop and publish their projects.
Our graduates confidently pursue successful careers in rural to suburban to urban practices, in the private sector and in academia. A number of our program graduates serve as chairmen of departments of Family Medicine, including our own Dr. George Kikano.
The residents, faculty, staff and I look forward to personally meeting you so that you may experience, first hand, the high level of collegiality in our innovative program. You will find the University Hospitals Case Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program to be a place where you can achieve excellence as a family physician.
With warm regards,
Al Cadesky, MD
