Postdoctoral Programs
At Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, we are committed to biomedical research excellence and bringing the brightest trainees from a broad range of backgrounds to tackle the biomedical challenges of the future.
For those who recently have earned a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, postdoctoral positions provide the opportunity to perform mentored research full-time under the supervision of a faculty member. The position can be held for up to five years and offers additional research or scholarly training in preparation for a career in academia, industry or government.
During your time as a postdoctoral trainee, you will be expected to complete an Independent Development Plan. IDPs review your research goals, presentations and skills training as well as provide opportunities for open dialogue between you and your mentor about your career goals.
Postdoctoral training programs are handled through the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. Appointments may be one of three options: postdoctoral scholar, postdoctoral fellow and research associate. Postdoctoral scholars engage in research projects funded by university faculty and staff grants, while postdoctoral fellows conduct research projects funded by grants that he or she has personally obtained from either governmental or nongovernmental sources. Individuals may also serve as research associates, which do not require supervision.
