Calcium Supplements

Calcium supplements have been given to otherwise healthy pregnant women to prevent high blood pressure and a serious condition called pre-eclampsia.

This condition in some cases can lead to the mother's or baby's death.

A large study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that calcium supplements unfortunately do not help in this situation.

Good intake of calcium in the diet remains important and may help reduce blood pressure.

This is because it is believed there are other effects from nutrients in food which are not present in supplements.
