In the field of surgery, the less invasive the better.

There is a new procedure for operating on some patients with diverticulitis, or inflammation of the large bowel, that is much safer than the standard operation.

This new way is by operating through a small device called a laparoscope.

Several small incisions 1/4 to 1/2 inch long are made in the abdomen.

A small video camera and special instruments are then used to repair the intestine.

Doctors at the Cleveland Clinic and elsewhere are using this system for selected patients.

Another advance in keeping the patients healthier.....longer.
