Fast Acting Insulin

The FDA this week approved a new fast-acting insulin for diabetes.

Humalog is a genetically engineered insulin that has already been approved in 20 other countries.

Its inventors say Humalog more closely mimics the body's natural rapid insulin output after eating a meal to properly control blood sugar.

Regular insulin users have had to time their injections at least 30 to 60 minutes before meals.

Tests showed that Humalog acted faster than regular human insulin and thus can be injected up to 15 minutes before a meal.
