Hernias in the Groin

A new study from the Netherlands and reported in The New England Journal of Medicine shows that hernias in the groin can be repaired very well by laparoscopic surgery.

The study included nearly a thousand patients, 95% of whom were male.

The results showed that the patients whose hernias were fixed by the laparoscopic method had a more rapid recovery, fewer complications and fewer recurrences than those repaired by conventional surgery.

An accompanying editorial points out some shortcomings of the study, but acclaims it as important information.
