Survey of Nursing Home Residents

Some people think nursing home residents do not want heroic life-sustaining measures used if they become ill. Not so shows a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The study showed 89% of residents surveyed want to be sent to a hospital if they become very sick. 60% want CPR if their heart suddenly stopped beating. One-third wanted tube feedings even if they had permanent brain damage.

The rest of us must be careful to know exactly how our elderly patients and relatives feel about this matter.
