Depression is responsible for suicide in 15% of the patients who have ever been hospitalized for that illness.

Despite that alarming fact, depression is seriously undertreated, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association.

One of several reasons for the undertreatment is a belief in the myth that psychiatric disorders are not real illnesses.

They are very real to the patients and their families.

The good news is there is excellent anti-depressive medication available for those patients who see their doctor.
