DEPARTMENT OF UROLOGY - RESEARCH

Dr. Gupta

Dr Gupta's research is primarily on prostate cancer and involves both basic and translational areas of focus. In basic research the focus is to develop appropriate biomarkers for early detection and prognosis of prostate cancer. Another focus is to identify novel targets to monitor the efficacy of treatment with chemopreventive or therapeutic agents. Through the years he has identified ornithine decarboxylase, cyclooxygenase-2, nitric oxide synthase-2, lipoxygenase-5, calcium binding proteins S100A2 and S100A4, and transcription factor NF-kappaB as important targets which play critical role in prostate tumorigenesis. This innovative research has led to the publication in several scientific journals including Clinical Cancer Research, Prostate, Cancer, Journal of Clinical Oncology and Neoplasia.
Dr Gupta's translational research focuses on identification of novel agents that could be supplemented with diet responsible for the possible delay of prostate carcinogenesis. Efforts are also underway to study the therapeutic potential of dietary agents that may lead to suppression of primary tumor and metastatic growth. The current focus is towards the development of apigenin, a plant flavonoid abundantly present in common fruits and vegetables, green tea polyphenols, and D-limonene, a monoterpene found in citrus fruits and citrus peel oil in prevention and treatment of prostate cancer. These projects have received support from National Cancer Institute, National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation. His innovative approach to develop these agents in the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer has led to publications in several journals including Cancer Research, Clinical Cancer Research, Oncogene, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, USA and has been featured on NBC-5 news and highlighted in the Plain Dealer, and American Association for Cancer Research press release.
