Through University Hospitals Robotic & Minimally Invasive Surgery Center, our physicians and researchers are collaborating to find new ways to advance the field of robotics for the treatment of urological disorders. Currently, the Department of Urology is working with the Case Western Reserve University Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science to develop new robotic ultrasound and biopsy technology.
In addition, our urologists are international pioneers in the field of natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES), expanding the range of scarless surgical procedures performed through the body's natural openings, such as the mouth, urethra, vagina and rectum. Researchers in our laboratories are developing techniques to remove part of the bladder through the stomach or urethra, and to remove kidney tumors by accessing them through the stomach or vagina.
