At Case Western Reserve University, the following classes are offered by our Department of Urology.

Urologic Surgery

This clerkship consists of a one-week rotation within University Hospitals Urology Institute during the third-year, general surgery core clerkship as an elective. The student, during this rotation, will have the opportunity to see patients in both the clinic and operating room settings. Core skills such as the evaluation of the urology patient, Foley catheterization, and basic surgical technique will be introduced. Students are evaluated at the conclusion of this rotation based on their level appropriate professionalism, ability to obtain and synthesize information regarding patients and their urologic conditions, as well as their commitment to the rotation.

Students interested in pursuing urology as a profession are strongly encouraged to apply for this elective.

Urological Externship

Our urological externship course is an opportunity for fourth-year medical students from CWRU and other medical schools to rotate here within the UH Urological Institute at CWRU spending additional time learning about urology and the unique aspects of our program specifically. This rotation provides students with a more in depth exposure to the many components of urological diseases and the clinical management of urological patients in a hospital setting. Students will be involved in the total care of urological patients and supervised by attending physicians. They will participate in ward rounds, attend the endoscopic suite, scrub surgical cases and admit patients, and attend weekly clinical conferences and urological meetings as well as our monthly Journal Club.

At the end of this rotation students will be asked to give a Grand Rounds presentation on topic of their choice. Students receive a grade and may ask our attending faculty for letters of recommendation to support their application to urology residency programs. Students are evaluated at the conclusion of this rotation based on their professionalism, ability to obtain and synthesize information regarding patients and their urologic conditions, level appropriate surgical skill set as well as their commitment to the rotation.

PREREQUISITE: Core Clerkship in Surgery (SURG 4000A) or Equivalent

Urology Acting-Internship

The Urology Acting-Internship is an advanced rotation and learning experience for fourth-year medical students from CWRU and other medical schools to continue to refine their understanding and management of urologic disease. This rotation differs from the Urologic Externship Rotation in that students will have primary responsibility for patient care under the supervision of faculty and will be expected to assist with in-house call under the immediate supervision of our junior residents.

Medical students are assigned patients daily to work up and follow for their entire hospital admission. Various inpatient and outpatient procedures will be performed under the supervision of attending and resident staff.
