Residency Program

There are multiple options for interested resident candidates.   The traditional Family Medicine residency program is balanced by our four year Family Medicine/Masters in Public Health residency program.   Above this, the department has an International Health track with solid didactic training and an international experience.   There are formal training tracks in Obstetrics and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. Residents have set up learned specific training tracks in areas of interest , such as Sports Medicine

The residency offers maximum flexibility to highly motivated learners who seek excellence in clinical training along with the opportunity to pursue areas of special interest that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries. Throughout training, residents are taught to combine knowledge of medicine and behavioral science with a humanistic approach to caring for patients.   There is a true commitment to education, with over seven hours of formal didactic coursework every week.

There are four months of Core Blocks in Family Medicine, where each class is brought together. There are a series of workshops, seminars and courses that are geared toward clinical, procedural, practice management/managed care, advanced life support and behavioral topics.   This is balanced with community-oriented projects and special topics.

Family Medicine residents have access to all systemwide resources of University Hospitals. These multiple sites balance cutting edge technology of a tertiary setting and "hands on" exposure at University Hospitals Case Medical Center and top quality community hospitals.   The residents assume responsibility for patient care in all major areas of the hospitals including internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, emergency services, obstetrics and gynecology, MICU, and other subspecialties.

A wealth of resources for elective rotations is available through our affiliated institutions. For their electives, residents can choose from standard choices or develop their own rotation depending on their educational needs and interests.

The Family Medicine Service allows family medicine attendings and resident to share inpatient management of primary care patients. Teaching on the service focuses on top quality, cost efficient, humane, continuity based care of patients.

The department has a tradition of being funded for major federal and privately supported grants. In fact for 2006 our department is ranked 7th in the NIH funding nationally, making us the highest NIH ranked department at Case Western Reserve Universtiy and University Hospitals. Research opportunities exist for interested residents with the support of the department's division of research.   The residency has a history of residents winning national research awards for projects they completed while in training.

The department offers opportunities for fellowships for the Family Medicine resident wishing to obtain expertise beyond residency.   Fellowships are available in Operative Obstetrics, Women's Health and an Academic focus.   The Operative Obstetrical fellowship is a shared fellowship with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.   The primary focus of this year is to gain operative obstetrical experience.

Our Women's Health fellowship is intended to provide expanded training in various aspects of Women's Health while maintaining proficiency in the wider discipline of Family Medicine. The curriculum consists of a series of longitudinal clinical experiences as clinician and preceptor, electives in various subspecialties with a gender-based focus, education of students and resident peers and participation in ongoing research.

The opportunities at the University Hospitals Case Medical Center Family Medicine Residency program are rich.   The resourses allow the interested individual to become a solid well rounded family physician, as well as the chance do develop expertise in a number of areas.
