Welcome

It is a pleasure to introduce you to one of the nation's top ranked departments of Family Medicine, the University Hospitals Case Medical Center Family Medicine Residency program. Our residency is the primary affiliate of Case Western Reserve University, hence our residents learn from some of the foremost clinical and academic leaders in the country.   The residency also benefits from the multiple training sites of the University Hospitals Health System including tertiary hospitals with national reputations such as Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital and community facilities.

The program features a traditional block format with selected longitudinal experiences. An exciting feature is the core months in family medicine curriculum.   Each class is brought together for four months of in depth Family Medicine training over the course of residency.   Didactic and workshop experiences and group projects teach clinical and procedural skills as well as behavioral and community medicine, practice management and advanced life support courses.

Various training tracks are available to interested residents. One of our most popular is in International Health. Residents in this track attend a longitudinal Journal Club and unique didactics intended to introduce health care issues in developing nations, refugee, and disaster medicine. All International Health track residents have a required project or experience in an international or remote domestic site. Residents in the OB track choose a high volume elective to augment their procedural numbers and teach in our annual citywide Advanced Life Support in OB course. Faculty with expertise in Sports Medicine, Addiction Medicine, Community Health, Underserved Care, Psychiatry, Geriatric Medicine, Adolescent Medicine, and more are available to teach and advise residents in their topical areas.

Our department also boasts one of the most productive and varied Family Medicine research divisions nationally. We serve as the editorial home of the country’s premier academic Family Medicine journal, the Annals of Family Medicine. A vibrant research infrastructure has helped interested residents develop and publish their projects.

There are also options to extend residency to acquire additional knowledge and skills, such as the four year combined MPH program. PGY4 Surgical OB and Women’s Health fellowship opportunities are offered in collaboration with the UHCMC department of OB/Gyn and Veteran’s Administration Hospital department of Medicine respectively, as well as an academic fellowship. Our graduates also compete successfully for outside Geriatric and Sports Medicine fellowships.

Residents see their continuity patients in our Family Medicine Center and affiliated nursing homes.   The patient population we care for is drawn from the surrounding city and suburbs of Cleveland as well as from the staff and faculty of UHCMC and the university, ensuring socioeconomic and ethnic diversity. We have a Health Provider Shortage Area (HPSA) designation. Our residents also work at the Free Clinic of Greater Cleveland and Care Alliance, serving the underserved medical consumer.

Over my eleven years as a faculty member in the department, I have proudly watched our graduates confidently pursue successful careers in remote to rural to suburban to urban practices, in the private sector and in academia. A number of our graduates serve as chairmen of departments of Family Medicine, including our own Dr. George Kikano.

I would like to personally invite you to come and visit our program and our outstanding group of residents, faculty and staff.   You will find the University Hospitals Case Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program to be a place where you can achieve excellence as a family physician. The residents, faculty and I look forward to personally meeting you so that you may experience, first hand, the high level of collegiality in our unique and innovative program.

With warm regards,
