Academic Fellowship

The Case/University Hospitals of Cleveland Family Medicine Residency Program has had a long tradition of offering a flexible academic fellowship in family medicine. This fellowship year is dedicated to the educational needs of the fellow and may take on a variety of forms. There is typically an element of faculty development that is intermixed during the fellow’s experience. Each fellow will focus their attention on one core area of development which includes such areas of concentration as international health, adolescent medicine, end of life care, and procedural skill development to name a few. Each fellow takes on the role as a junior faculty member with our department to include assisting in the educational mission for both the residency and medical student programs. Fellows develop precepting skills, are involved in some elements of the curriculum for the residency and formal teaching for the residency and medical student clerkship in family medicine.

Individuals that pursue academic fellowships typically fall into one of two categories; (1) A means to jumpstart a career in academic family medicine by developing skills that typically would take much longer; and (2) Individuals that go into a clinical practice setting with the desire to seek the skills that set them apart from their colleagues. We invite you to consider our fellowship programs.
