Poster Title

Practice Based Learning and Improvement Course for Third Year Medical Students

Poster Abstract (Text only, do not exceed 250 words)

Introduction:  Practice Based Learning and Improvement (PBLI) applies Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) knowledge to the clinical environment.  Demonstration of knowledge in this area is an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education requirement for many residency programs.  This project will introduce these concepts to third year medical students to prepare them for future experiences with CQI.

Objectives:  To pilot a four-module course modeled after one that is currently in place for Internal Medical Residents.  Students will complete a personal improvement project using analytical tools introduced in the PBLI course.

Methods:

Subjects:  Third year medical students on their Internal Medicine ambulatory block.

Process:  Twenty-four students over the course of a year will participate in four modules with didactics that cover:  systems thinking, data collection and change concepts.  Through personal improvement projects, students will work to collect and analyze data sets while presenting weekly progress in small group discussions.  Students experience will be enhanced by exposure to quality improvement projects currently conducted in residents’ continuity clinics.

Analysis:  Monthly evaluation from students will be solicited.  Pre and post-testing of a quality improvement knowledge assessment tool will gauge the effectiveness of this program as a learning tool.  Faculty time for the teaching sessions and scoring of the quality knowledge assessment tool will be tracked.

Results:  Medical students will demonstrate a change in knowledge on the quality improvement test.  Faculty hours per student will be assessed to determine what resources are needed to implement this program for all medical students.
