Implementing Virtual Microscopy in Year One Pathology: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Problem Solving |
|
Poster Abstract (Text only, do not exceed 250 words)
Problem: The objective is the more effective use of microscopy by year one medical students in understanding pathophysiologic processes. An integrated knowledge of histopathology and altered biochemical pathways are critical to the future physician's ability to interpret pathologic findings and understand rationale for therapeutic options. Lack of interactive discussion, and integration of pathology into previously acquired basic science knowledge have limited the success of current small group conferences in this committee.
Goal: The goal of the program is to introduce and implement virtual microscopy in a multidisciplinary format as a teaching and learning tool in the small group problem solving in Biologic Basis of Disease Year One Committee.
Methods: Select small group modules in year one Biologic Basis of Disease Committee will be adapted for virtual microscopy using image-based web linkages to gross images, biochemical pathways, related literature and Case School of Medicine e-curriculum.
Evaluation: Four levels of evaluation are proposed: 1) reaction, 2) learning, 3) behavior and 4) performance using written and oral feedback and objective test scores.
After completion of these modules the student will be able to:
1) Identify key differences between normal and abnormal histopathologic findings that distinguish a given disease process.
2) Correlate the histopathologic findings with the known biochemical pathway abnormalities that cause and/or result from the changes observed.
3) Apply virtual microscopy skills and utilize the web linkages to facilitate:
a) generation of differential diagnoses,
b) participation in small group discussion,
c) acquiring knowledge in pathology using an integrated multidisciplinary approach.
