Dr. Inui acquired his BA in philosophy form Haverford College and completed the MD and Masters of Science in Public Health at the Johns Hopkins University (1969 and 1973, respectively). At the Johns Hopkins Hospital (1969-74), he served as an intern, resident, and chief resident in internal medicine and was a Carnegie-Commonwealth Clinical Scholar (1971-73).
After service as the Physician-in Chief at the Albuquerque USPHS Indian Hospital, Dr. Inui developed a General Internal Medicine section at the Seattle VA Medical Center and established the Pacific Northwest VA Health Services Research and Development Program. At the University of Washington he also served as Director of the RWJ Clinical Scholars Program (1977-1992) and Division Head for General Internal Medicine (1986-1992).
In 1992, Dr. Inui founded the Harvard Medical School/Harvard Community Health Plan Department of Ambulatory Care and Prevention. He also served as Director of the HMS Primary Care Division, HMS Faculty Dean, and Medical Director of Research and Education of HPHC. His appointments were as the Paul C. Cabot Professor of Ambulatory Care and Prevention, Harvard Medical School, and Professor of Health and Social Behavior at the Harvard School of Public Health. In 2002, Dr. Inui became President and CEO of the Regenstrief Institute, Sam Regenstrief Professor of Health Services Research, Professor of Medicine, and Associate Dean for Health Care Research.
Dr. Inui's special emphases in teaching and research have included physician/patient communication, health promotion and disease prevention, the social context of medicine, and medical humanities. His honors include elected membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha, Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars, Institute of Medicine, a USPHS Medal of Commendation, Presidency of the Society of General Internal Medicine, receipt of SGIM's Robert Glaser Award (for generalism), and election to the Institute of Medicine and IOM Council.
