clinical research units

The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) component of the Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative (CTSC) at Case Western Reserve University is designed to provide investigators with inpatient and outpatient research facilities for the conduct of clinical research in both adult and pediatric populations. Resources are available for use by investigators affiliated with Case Western Reserve University, MetroHealth Medical Center, The Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, with NIH or other funding, as well as trainees just beginning their research careers.

Leadership
Mission
  • Provide outstanding controlled inpatient and outpatient human subjects research environments, personnel, and core lab services, ensuring the conduct and data collection of clinical and translational research projects, at the most effective cost.
  • Ensure a culturally sensitive and welcoming clinical research environment for volunteer research participants.
  • Afford greater capacity and opportunity for clinical and translational research to be conducted through economies of scale, by promoting the efficient use of personnel and physical resources across the CTSC sites, thus enabling more science to occur than could at any single institution.
How we support investigators
  • Research resource facilities and personnel are available to investigators, upon application. Requests, for example, may include but are not limited to:
    • Inpatient research-only overnight stays
    • Outpatient examination room space
    • Outpatient protocol nurse visits
    • Specialized procedure rooms
    • Sleep monitoring facilities
    • Body composition and bone mineral density measuring equipment
    • Core laboratories with sample processing and analysis facilities
    • Metabolic meal preparation; research dietician consultation
    • Human exercise performance measurement lab
    • Personnel to provide expert support to operationalize the logistics of clinical research protocols so that studies are conducted effectively, efficiently and with accurate data yielded.
    • Highly trained research personnel available to carry-out the research protocol with the research participants.
    • Plans are underway to develop a participant recruitment database.
  • In addition to their physical sites, the Clinical Research Units can be requested to provide clinical research support for protocols conducted in outpatient medical centers and other community settings.
  • For studies that are multi-site across the CTSC institutions, please consult your primary institution's Clinical Research Unit first and coordination across sites will be facilitated for you.
