
The CTSC, now four years old, is collecting stories about successful research collaborations that include a community research component. We will publish them here, in our news letter CTSC Connections, and we will seek media interest. BREAST and Amigas Unidas: A common perception of clinical and translational science is that it represents a continuum of medical discovery from bench (basic science) to bedside (clinical application). "But, it is much more of a cycle than a one-way path. The Community Partnership core group of the collaborative sees many opportunities for applying research to successful clinical programs with a goal of medical discovery from "bedside to bench". Currently, they are working with Dr. Jean Stevenson of MetroHealth Medical Center and her team to help them quantify, analyze and publish data related to two innovative programs that are dramatically improving low-income and minority women access to healthcare. PBRN Diabetes Studies: With diabetes soaring to epidemic proportions in the U.S. and one in 11 people in northeast Ohio now having the disease, knowing and employing the most effective means of managing diabetes is of enormous interest to clinicians - especially those in Cleveland's "safety net" practices which offer care to low-income patients who are often at higher than average risk of developing diabetes and its complications. Community Partnership/Kidney Foundation Study: The Ohio Department of Health sees diabetes and hypertension rising at alarming rates throughout Ohio-especially in Northeast Ohio, and these illnesses place people at greater risk for developing chronic kidney (CKD). Understanding what interventions might minimize the effects of the disease and/or slow its progression toward dialysis or transplant is a priority for those who provide assistance and education to people suffering from CKD.
