biostatistics, epidemiology & research design

The Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD) core is an infrastructure of shared resources providing specialized biostatistics expertise under the umbrella of a new Cleveland-wide program made up of the three major medical research institutions in Cleveland, Ohio: Case Western Reserve University (Case)/University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC), the Cleveland Clinic (CC), and MetroHealth Medical Center (MHMC). The inclusion of expert teams in specialty areas will facilitate the development and application of innovative designs and analytic approaches for projects designed by CTSC investigators. While the Clinical and Translational Methodologies Core is the central CTSC home for development of new methodologies, members of the expert teams in the BERD collectively possess a broad range of additional methodological capabilities and can work with investigators on needed methodological problems.

Leadership
Mission
  • Provide biostatistical and epidemiological evaluation of clinical research proposals
  • Collaborate with CTSC investigators in study design, including novel statistical methodologies
  • Educate researchers in design, biostatistical and epidemiological methods
  • Develop an infrastructure of shared resources as well as specialized biostatistical and epidemiological expertise
How we support investigators
  • Reviewing research proposals to strengthen, if necessary, biostatistical/epidemiological aspects
  • User-friendly and timely support to help design effective research CTSC proposals / analysis plans
  • Assisting investigators with their grant applications
  • Adding value to the investigator's experience
    • Education in research design / biostatistics / epidemiology issues
    • Development of "expert teams" and "shared resources" infrastructure to provide added support to investigators
    • Connections to other cores (e.g., CTSC Translational Methodologies Resources) and groups offering statistical collaboration (e.g., Center for Clinical Investigation Statistical Sciences Group at Case School of Medicine, Center for Health Care Research and Policy at MetroHealth, Case Comprehensive Cancer Center Biostatistics Core, and Department of Quantitative Health Sciences at the Cleveland Clinic)
