David Satcher ’70, Ph.D. ’70, was named interim president of the Morehouse School of Medicine, Atlanta, in December. He remains director of the school’s National Center for Primary Care.

Dr. Satcher served as the interim dean of the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School from 1977 to 1979. He was professor and chairman of the Department of Community Medicine and Family Practice at the Morehouse School of Medicine from 1979 to 1982 and was president of Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., from 1982 to 1993, when he was named director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta. He was surgeon general from 1998 to 2002.

In October 2004, Dr. Satcher received the John G. Walsh Award from the American Academy of Family Physicians. The award, for “dedicated, long-term, effective leadership toward advancing the development of family medicine,” is one of the highest honors presented by the AAFP.

In 2003, he received the Robert F. Allen Symbol of H.O.P.E. Award from the American Journal of Health Promotion. H.O.P.E. stands for Helping Other People through Empowerment. The award recognizes an individual who makes an outstanding contribution to serving the health promotion needs of underserved populations or to promoting cultural diversity within health promotion.
