1975 alumnus named dean at Chicago Medical School
Arthur J. Ross III ’75
Arthur J. Ross III ’75 marked the first anniversary of his appointment as dean of the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in June. He also is vice president for medical affairs at the university, which changed its name from Finch University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School in March 2004. After earning a bachelor of science degree from Trinity College and his medical degree, Dr. Ross completed a residency in general and thoracic surgery at Duke University Medical Center and a post-doctoral fellowship in pharmacology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Following eight years at Duke, he spent three years at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in pediatric surgery fellowships, including two clinical years and one research year. After this training, he joined the faculty of CHOP/University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, serving as an associate professor of surgery, director of the Pediatric Surgical Research Laboratory, and chair-elect of the medical school’s admissions committee. While at Penn, he received the Class of 1992’s Recognition for Teaching Excellence Award. In 1993, Dr. Ross joined the University of Wisconsin Medical School (UWMS) as the associate dean for the Western Clinical Campus and a professor of surgery and pediatrics. He was the chief academic officer for the Gundersen Lutheran Health System and practiced pediatric surgery at the system’s La Crosse campus. He also was director of medical education for the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation and chair of the Department of Staff Development. In 1997, and again in 2003, he was honored with that school’s Medical Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award. While in Wisconsin, Dr. Ross served as a fellow in administrative medicine at UWMS, which led to a master’s degree in administrative medicine. He also earned a master’s in business administration degree from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Dr. Ross is certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics and is a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, the Society of University Surgeons, and the American College of Physician Executives. He is the author or co-author of almost 100 original articles and book chapters that reflect his ongoing interest in the areas of calcium, the calcemic hormones and newborn calcium homeostasis, as well as pediatric endocrine surgery, newborn surgical emergencies and pediatric trauma. |
