The suspense ended when noon arrived and students could approach the tables on which their match envelopes awaited.

Richard Aach
Planned retirement meant that Richard Aach, M.D., associate dean and director of residency and career planning, marked his last Match Day in this advising role in 2005.

Much of the country was celebrating St. Patrick’s Day on March 17, but the future was at the forefront of the minds of Class of 2005 students at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. For them, March 17 was Match Day.

Marking one of the last hurdles before commencement, Match Day is when graduating M.D. students learn where they’ll be spending the next three to seven years of their lives undergoing the additional training necessary to practice and receive board certification. During the year, students interview at hospitals around the country and then list their preferences as to where they would like to receive this additional training. On Match Day, they discover how their choices matched up with those of hospitals at which they interviewed.

Excitement built as noon approached in the lobby of the Wolstein Research Building, where students anxiously awaited the chance to rush the tables on which sat the envelopes that told their fate.

Medical school administrators congratulated the students as they counted the minutes until noon.

“You did superbly,” said Richard Aach, M.D., associate dean and director of residency and career planning, who marked his last Match Day in this role. “You did us proud and will represent us well.”

“Good luck. Now the real work starts,” said Robert Haynie, M.D., Ph.D., associate dean for student affairs. Dr. Haynie, a 1972 Ph.D. alumnus and 1978 M.D. alumnus, mentioned that the class was the first one with which he had been involved after being named associate dean.

“I want to wish you all the best of luck. It’s going to be great to watch all of your careers,” C. Kent Smith, M.D., senior associate dean for students, said.

Ralph I. Horwitz, M.D., dean of the School of Medicine and vice president for medical affairs, told the students that Match Day proves the adage “that the reward for a job well done is another job.”

At noon, students were rewarded with the opportunity to personally experience the satisfaction expressed by the administrators. Envelopes were ripped and screams erupted. (Students who could not attend the festivities could log on to their computers at 1 p.m. to learn their fates.)

The Class of 2005 will undertake a total of 158 residencies (some students will complete more than one residency because their intended fields require it). Of those residencies, 54 will be undertaken in Ohio – 49 in Northeast Ohio and five elsewhere in the state.

The most popular residency choices of students in the class were pediatrics (15 residencies) and internal medicine (14), with six additional residencies in internal medicine/pediatrics and 15 internal medicine/preliminary residencies. Another primary care field, family medicine, had seven matches.

The field of surgery had 10 matches, including one preliminary residency, and the specialties of emergency medicine, orthopedic surgery, pathology, psychiatry, and diagnostic radiology also were popular with the class, with nine residencies in each field to be undertaken. Residency positions in these specialties remain highly competitive.

The popularity of various specialties among Case medical students also was reflected nationally.

A run-down of other fields represented in the match at Case, listed alphabetically: anesthesiology, five matches; dermatology, two; neurology, six; neurosurgery, one; obstetrics/gynecology, six; ophthalmology, four; oral and maxillofacial surgery, one; otolaryngology, three; physical medicine and rehabilitation, one; radiation oncology, two; plastic surgery, one; transitional, 12; urology, two.

The following list includes the names of all members of the Class of 2005 who are serving residencies (including those who secured their residencies outside the National Resident Matching Program) and the types and locations of the residencies. Hospitals not identified with a city are located in Cleveland.
