From the deanOur heritage, our future
Dear Alumni, Faculty and Students and Other Friends: We at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine are just as passionate about the school’s history as we are energized by its future. In every new endeavor of the school, from its new curriculum (the Case System of Medical Education), to its emphasis on ethical values (the focus on civic professionalism), to its bold leap into the science and practice of “individualized” medicine (on the new West Quad campus), we are linking our future to the great achievements of past leaders. These leaders were the prominent proponents of the Western Reserve curriculum and the scientists and clinicians whose work has made the name Western Reserve synonymous with leadership in American medicine. We seek now to celebrate this heritage and remember our history. In keeping with this goal, I am pleased to announce two ways in which we at the School of Medicine are keeping alive the Western Reserve legacy. The Medical Annual Fund has been renamed the Western Reserve Medical Annual Fund. Although the name has changed, contributions will continue to further the school’s tradition of excellence in education and research. The school’s new John L. Caughey Jr., M.D., Society is another way in which we can honor our distinguished history while benefiting the future. Dr. Caughey has a special place in the hearts of the estimated 3,000 people he personally selected for medical school during his full-time tenure with the School of Medicine from 1945 to 1974 – first as assistant dean and then as associate dean of student affairs – and as a member of the admissions committee for 20 years afterward. Now, those who make gifts of $1,000 or more in a year will be recognized as members of the Caughey Society and will have special opportunities to learn about our innovative education and research programs. We hope that alumni, faculty, students and friends of the School of Medicine share in our excitement over these new initiatives. For more information about the Western Reserve Medical Annual Fund and the John L. Caughey Jr., M.D., Society, please write the medical school’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations in care of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, 10900 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44106-4923, or call (216) 368-6830 or (800) 315-4438. Sincerely,
Ralph I. Horwitz, M.D. Dean, School of Medicine, and Vice President for Medical Affairs |
